We members of the Keswick Ridge Historical Society believe that it is important to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is the traditional unceded territory of the Wəlastəkwiyik (Maliseet) and Mi’kmaq Peoples. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq, Wəlastəkwiyik (Maliseet) and Passamaquoddy Peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1726. The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources. They recognized Mi’kmaq and Wəlastəkwiyik (Maliseet) title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship of peace, friendship, and mutual respect between nations for two very different modes of life and land use.
